Why is Teams being so flaky with VPN? Anyone else dealing with this?

Hello friends,

The other day, while having a video meeting via Office 365 Teams, the connection crashed as soon as I turned on the VPN. The video would freeze, the audio would cut out a complete “where did I go wrong” drama.  Just as I was rushing for a deadline.

My VPN is running in “corporate security” mode, but when I connect to Teams, my packets slow down incredibly. My first thought was: is my internet bad? But I uninstalled the VPN, and everything is perfect low ping, smooth video. So, the problem clearly seems to be the VPN and Teams compatibility. It’s not like you can find it by searching for “help with assignments in Canada” somewhere, but… (A little joke, yes, but I think about how comforting written support can be in times like these assignment writers, etc.)

Anyway, what did I do? I lowered the MTU value in the VPN settings (to 1280), and it became a bit more stable. Does anyone have any other tips? Maybe a DNS flush, maybe a different protocol (OpenVPN instead of IKEv2)? I’m not entirely sure, but I’m open to trying…

This issue is truly ill-timed, especially with the finals approaching. Teams is important, VPN security is important we can’t afford to compromise either side.

Does anyone have any ideas? Have you experienced a similar problem? How did you solve it?

Thanks in advance, guys. I hope I find the solution here. Otherwise, I’ll consider marking the corporate VPN as “very professional but very annoying.”
